St Gallen win 2-1 on agg

Oh dear. Just when things could not get any worse for Chelsea's dismal start to the season, this happens. Defending a slim 1-0 goal lead, this trip to Switzerland was never going to be easy, but in theory, Chelsea had more than enough class and skill to overcome Swiss minnows St Gallen.

How wrong we were, right from the start, playing a 4-3-3 formation, Chelsea did not look comfortable in possession, too many passes were wayward, the ball given away all to frequently. St Gallen on the other hand were well up for this one, and looked dangerous everytime they went forward.

With a defensive partnership of Lebouef and Bogarde that seemed to panic everytime a ball went into the six yard area, it was no surprise when Muller scored on 19 mins. Where Panucci was to act as cover, i'm sure most of the travelling support would like to know, although it was a terrible goal to give away. As if things could not get worse, robbie was stretchered off with a horrific leg break very similar to the one Nillis sustained against Ipswich.

The game was more or less sown up in the 35th minute with Amoah scoring after yet another defensive mix up. It was park football standard defending to say the least, and this from our resident 'World Cup Winner'.

Admittedly the 2nd half was better, but it could not have really got any worse after the 1st half, some good attacking play from Alekidze and Dalla Bonna were the only high points of a desperately disappointing and premature end to our UEFA cup campaign. Right up to the end, Chelsea needed just one goal to take it to extra time, but a combination of good goalkeeping, bad luck, and poor build up play meant Chelsea were never going to get the goal they needed.

In retrospect, everyone down the pub had no complaints, because St Gallen deserved to win anyway. Roll on Liverpool, we might even be up for this one!
